Recently my son who has high funcitoning autism has started to behave very badly and we are at our wits end about how to control this better

Your son's autism may cause him to act inappropriately, but he knows what bad behavior is. No doubt he is acting out his frustration over his inability to interact with society.

I suggest you only give him as much interaction as he can handle. If he acts up, tell him what he has done wrong, and isolate him so the can calm down and reflect on his behavior.

Your son may tell you otherwise, but autistics want to be socially acceptable, they just don't know how to go about it.
