David Kirby, Kim Stagliano, Barbara Fischkin, Dan Olmsted, and Stephen Shore will appear on an autism writers' panel at the NYC autism conference.

Autism Conferences of America, in collaboration with the New York Metro Chapter of the National Autism Association and the Autism Research Institute, is hosting an autism and Asperger’s Syndrome conference on October 3-4, 2009 in New York City. The theme for the 2nd annual conference is “Educating & Healing Children with Autism.”

Autism Conference Overview

The conference will be held on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at the Stephen Gaynor School. The school is located at 148 West 90th Street and it is recommended that conference attendees stay at one of the following hotels:

Saturday Workshop Topics

The two-day conference will feature workshops on several topics related to autism education as well as biomedical treatments for children on the spectrum. On Saturday, October 3 Eustacia Cutler will present the opening address. Cutler is the mother of Temple Grandin, an individual with autism and a well-respected author and autism export. Cutler will reflect on her experiences raising a child on the autism spectrum before the condition was understood as well as it is today.

Other topics scheduled to be covered on Saturday include evaluating communication skills, autism insurance concerns, the benefits of yoga to developmentally delayed children, a primer on special needs trusts, and an exclusive writers panel.

The autism writers’ panel will include some of the most popular names in autism biomedical media including David Kirby, Kim Stagliano, Barbara Fischkin, Dan Olmsted, and Stephen Shore.

Sunday Workshop Topics

Nancy O’Hara, MD, a DAN! physician trainer, will be presenting the opening address on Sunday. She will be providing an overview of biomedical treatments to the conference attendees. The day continues with a look at the nutritional concerns of children on the autism spectrum, information about Autism Speaks’ current research, and an assessment of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) “best practices”. Doreen Granpeesheh, Ph.D., BCBA of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) will give the ABA overview.

Conference Registration

The early bird deadline for the 2nd annual NYC autism conference is September 10, 2009. Individuals on the autism spectrum can register to attend one day of the conference for $20 or the entire conference for $30 if registration is submitted by the early bird deadline.

The full conference early bird registration fee for family members is $195; professionals pay $240, while a discounted rate of $105 has been negotiated for students, habilitations professionals, and paraprofessionals.
